What is gematria?

gematria is an ancient practice of assigning numerical values to words and phrases to uncover hidden meanings and decode the original intent. It was widely used in ancient times by various civilizations, including the Egyptians, Hebraic, Islamic, Greek and Chinese cultures.

Essentially, Gematria assigns numerical value to letters of the alphabet; each letter having its own unique value. For example in Jewish Gematria, Alef is equal to 1; Bet = 2; Gimel = 3; Dalet = 4; and so on. Once the numerical values of words are assigned, each word can be added together like a mathematical equation in order to arrive at a total number. This single number can then be analyzed for its deeper meaning.

For hundreds of years Gematria has been used for divination and analysis of words in scripture or prophetic texts. Its purpose usually involves discovering a deeper spiritual or esoteric understanding beyond just the literal meaning of a given text or phrase. There are many different ways to interpret the number that results from an equation as it is believed that these numbers can reveal hidden messages or future events encoded by some higher power. For example, if one were to calculate the Gematria of a Biblical passage they could find numerical coincidences with prophecies from other religions or find patterns linking characters within a story together.

Gematria has also been used for other purposes such as commercial code breaking as well as magical uses such as alchemy and magically-charged names or talismans etc.. The possibilities are virtually endless depending on one's intent when working with Gematria equations.
